Professor Norman Uphoff

Norman Uphoff is professor of government and international agriculture at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA, and currently head of the Sustainable Rice Systems program of the Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture and Development (CIIFAD), From 1990 to 2005 he served as director of CIIFAD, during which time he became acquainted with the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), which has been the focus of much of his research, advising and writing for the past ten years. He has worked previously in the applied social sciences for rural development, being concerned with local organizations, institutional development, social capital, and participatory irrigation and natural resources management.
